Non-inflammatory lesions
Whiteheads and blacknheads are known as comedones. They are created when the opening of hair follicles are clogged and blocked with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Closed comedones are black and referred to as blackheads while open comedones are white and referred to as white heads. Whiteheads are slighly raised and skin-colored.
Inflammatory lesions
These are more dangerous than the average blackhead and whitehead. Papules are small red, and raised, and are a manifestation of an infection in the hair follicles. They are often tender and slightly painful. Pustules are papules with pus at the tips. Nodules are large and solid bumps beneath the skin. They are formed when the buildup of secretions is deep in the hair follicles. Cysts are painful lumps filled with pus beneath the skin. They can cause scarring when popped.
